Just came back from New York the next day and I heard loud noises at home. As I opened Instagram and found that several Chicago photographers were posting stories about Navy Blue Angels. Checked the official website, it wrote that Friday is a rehearsal, and the weekends of August 21st and 22nd were official performances. I immediately asked my friends to hang out and enjoy the Chicago Air& Water Show at the weekend at the best viewing spots recommended by officials.
Chicago holds Chicago Air& Water Show every year?
01｜Navy Blue Angels flew quickly in from of us.
I don’t know anything about the Chicago Air& Water Show before I attend this show. The annual air show is held in Lake Michigan, and it is the second popular show in Chicago. The Chicago Air& Water Show is a free event. The performance we saw this year were mainly formation jets performing stunts, but in the past, there seemed to be parachute teams, water skiing and boat jumping performances. The best viewing place written on the official website is North Avenue Beach, which is very popular sightseeing in Summer.

02｜The beach was full of people. And I was fascinated by the silver-haired couple in from of me. Maybe they have been watching the Air& Water Show together for many years, seeing the show from young to old.
As mentioned before, when it comes to summer, there are full of people on Chicago’s beach. Like today, because of the Chicago Air& Water Show, it is denser than before.

When the performance is about to start, there will be a broadcast to inform everyone.
04｜We can not know where the Navy Blue Angels fly to.
Suddenly the plane was caught off guard and flew directly overhead from somewhere above. The two planes fly to downtown Chicago, make a circle around Chicago, and then return to the lake to perform aerobatics.
05｜Although the official website said that we can see the show at whole Chicago, most performances are displayed above Michigan Lake.
06｜As a result, there are full of people on North Avenue Beach.
We could see the planes flew occasionally opposing each other, suddenly up and down, and every kind of stunt makes people hold their breath.

In order to have a better vision to see the performances, I abandoned my friends and ran to the edge of the beach and lake to be the first front line. In fact, even if you are standing on the beach and being overwhelmed by the crowd, you can still see the airplane stunts. But I want to shoot airplanes! So I have to try to avoid the crowds, otherwise, the photos will be full of people’s heads.
08｜It is hard to catch the timing of shooting airplanes at first. Later, I get more and more knowledgeable about their performances. I can probably know where they will meet, or what kind of performance they will perform so that I can shoot the airplanes at the best timing.
Do you know why I can shoot the planes at the best timing? That is because the Air& Water Show lasted for nearly an hour! What’s more surprising to me is that the one-hour performance has been shortened due to the epidemic. In the past, the Air & Water Show used to be 5 hours!

However, 5-hour-performance should include other stunts such as water skiing, skydiving, and so on! Otherwise, I don’t know how many planes need to be changed to complete the 5-hour flight performance.

The 1-hour performance does not make people feel lengthy, on the contrary, you would hear more exclamation at the end of the show.
