7 Spots to Take Photos with Tokyo Tower in Japan

Last Updated on 2024-04-12

Tokyo Tower is unquestionably one of the must-see attractions for many tourists and travelers visiting Tokyo, Japan for the first time. As a first-time visitor myself, I made sure to gather a list of prime locations for capturing photos of Tokyo Tower beforehand and dedicated some time to exploring each of them.

Tokyo Tower

The Tokyo Tower, situated in the Minato district of Tokyo within a high-rise building, is officially known as the “Japan Radio Tower.” It serves not only as a landmark structure for transmitting television and radio waves but also as an iconic symbol of Tokyo itself. Modeled after the Eiffel Tower in France, the Tokyo Tower was unveiled in 1958. Standing at a height of 333 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower, it currently ranks as the second tallest structure in Japan.

The iconic red and white color scheme of the Tokyo Tower is a classic symbol that distinguishes it from its surroundings. This color combination is mandated by air traffic control regulations to ensure visibility to aircraft pilots, thereby preventing collisions. At night, the tower is illuminated with white lights during the summer and orange lights during other seasons. Additionally, special festivals or events may feature a variety of rich lighting color schemes to further enhance the tower’s appearance.

Shibuya Sky

Tokyo Tower

Shibuya Sky has quickly become a beloved Tokyo landmark since its inauguration in 2020. While the admission fee of 1,800 yen may seem steep, it is truly worth it for the breathtaking panoramic views it offers. From the observation deck, visitors can marvel at the iconic Shibuya crossing, Tokyo Tower, Skytree, and even Mt. Fuji on clear days.

Although tickets can be purchased onsite, it is advisable to buy them online in advance to avoid long queues. The optimal time to visit Shibuya Sky is just before sunset, allowing you to witness the transition from daylight to sunset and then to the stunning nighttime scenery.

Akabanebashi Station on the Toei Oedo Line is conveniently situated near Tokyo Tower, positioned on the southwest side of Shiba Park. As you step out of the station, you’ll be greeted by the majestic presence of Tokyo Tower.

Visiting at night offers a unique opportunity to capture stunning photographs of the tower against the backdrop of the train tracks at Akabanebashi Station, nestled at the intersection of five roads.

Interestingly, this intersection is featured in Jay Chou’s music video for “Promise Not to Cry” – a noteworthy tidbit for fans of his work.

The Tokyo Tower stands tall amidst the towering buildings of the city. However, just across the street lies the expansive greenery of Shiba Park No. 1. With no tall structures obstructing the view, the Tokyo Tower is clearly visible, directly in front of you. You needn’t adjust your angle – simply stand on the grass and capture the picturesque scene with the blue sky, fluffy white clouds, lush greenery, and the iconic Tokyo Tower in one frame.

Every autumn, Shiba Park is adorned with various beautiful ginkgo trees, offering stunning photo opportunities. Even in December, the park remains a picturesque spot, with the ground covered in golden ginkgo leaves, creating a captivating scene worth capturing on camera.

The Tokyo Tower reflected in the high-rise buildings would look even more complete with a better angle for the shot.

While I suggest visiting Tokyo Tower during the day to explore Shiba Park and take photos, an evening visit to the area might offer unexpected delights. Take a stroll around the nearby high-rise buildings, as you might discover some hidden gems waiting to be uncovered in the nighttime glow of the cityscape.

In addition to researching Tokyo Tower photo spots online beforehand, embarking on a journey of exploration on foot can also be immensely rewarding. While it may be tiring, the process of discovering new and exciting photo locations around the tower with your own two feet can be incredibly enjoyable.

The pathway adjacent to Kumano Shrine forms a straight corridor that beckons towards the Tokyo Tower. This linear perspective creates a captivating visual extension. During the daytime, the verdant foliage lining the path provides a striking contrast against the tower’s vibrant red hue.

Tokyo Prince Hotel Skybridge

batch 東京鐵塔 46 1
This is my favorite photo with Tokyo Tower!

Many people recommend staying at the Royal Prince Hotel Tokyo Garden Tower to take pictures of the Tokyo Tower. However, I have found a spot not far from the Garden Tower that offers an excellent view of the Tokyo Tower: the footbridge in front of the Prince Hotel near Shiba Park. This spot is my favorite for taking pictures of the Tokyo Tower!

The reflection of the Tokyo Tower on the handrail adds a unique element to the photo. Additionally, because it’s an overpass, you can use the street lights on the overpass to help illuminate your photo, serving as natural fill light.
